Why do I need a title?

Alabama is a title state.  A title is a document which proves ownership.  State law requires an Alabama resident who owns a motor vehicle to obtain a title for that motor vehicle if it is a 1975 or newer model.   A new Alabama resident is required to title and register his vehicle within thirty (30) days of moving into the state.  Boats are not titled.

You may apply for an Alabama title at any motor vehicle office in Baldwin County.  Titles are printed in Montgomery mailed to the vehicle owners or lien holders.  The fee for applying for a title is $18.00.

In Alabama, if your motor vehicle is 1975 or newer, it must be titled by the State. Application for title is made to the Alabama Department of Revenue in Montgomery through the Probate Office or other designated agent such as an auto dealer. If you apply for title through this office, we will prepare the application for you. Application fee is $18.00. The application process will be easier if you’re aware of Revenue Department requirements for your particular situation, and time consuming delays may be avoided. Please help us to serve you better by being prepared to meet State requirements when you apply for title.
